Nature’s Gate Rice Bran Facial Moisturizer I received a full-sized moisturizer that is free of harmful toxins such as parabens, phthalates, artificial fragrances, PEG, mineral oil, petroleum. Instead, natural ingredients are used such as oat kernel extract which helps diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, natural peptides from Maca to promote a radiant and even looking skin tone, and rice bran which is a rich source of Vitamin E and essential fatty acids. It also contains an exclusive blend of white tea, olive, aloe, argan, flaxseed, blackberry and acerola which are packed with nutrients and antioxidants to promote softer, smoother, more youthful looking skin. This is also a PETA Beauty Without Bunnies cruelty-free product meaning it was produced without testing on animals.

Linwoods Super Food Blends These Super Foods blends of organic ground flaxseeds, nuts, berries and seeds to help you get essential omega acids, vitamins and minerals. They are easy to incorporate into your diet by adding to oatmeal, hot and cold cereals, soups, salads, stews, curries, cakes and biscuits etc. Recipe suggestions are available on the Linwoods website. I received four different varieties and am sprinkled some of the milled organic flaxseed onto some oatmeal I made this morning. I added in some apples and raisins and my toddler gobbled it up!

WEXY Biodegradable Snack Bags Inspired by kids and created by moms, these eco-friendly snack bags are BPA Free, biodegradable, disposable, recyclable, reusable and are packaged using 100% recycled material.

Fyrefly Organic Teas Certified organic and naturally caffeine-free, these herbal teas are created by a licensed Naturopathic Doctor, who has over 15 years of experience working with herbs and are placed in 100% biodegradable and compostable packaging. I received eight cups worth of  the Serenity Tea, a soothing and mild blend of Lemonbalm, Milky Oat Tops and Lavender that can be used to improve sleep quality, calm the nerves and gently support adrenal function when feeling stressed. As a birth doula and lactation professional, I love that they offer several blends specifically for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

7th Heaven 100% Natural Face Masks These cruelty-free masks are packed with organic, vegan ingredients sourced from all over the world. I received the Moroccan Clay mask which is packed with Rhassoul Clay which is a rich source of minerals and is highly detoxifying and nourishing. Studies show that it reduces dryness, improves skin clarity and elasticity and has extractive abilities that remove impurities and unblock pores, even stubborn blackheads. Other ingredients include crushed apricot seeds and argan shells to gently buff away dead cells.

Kelapo Extra Virgin Coconut Oil As one of the first Fair Trade coconut oil food products on the market, Kelapo Extra Virgin Coconut OIl is 100% organic, vegetarian and free of trans fats. Extra virgin coconut oil is comprised of medium chain triglycerides, or MCTs, that you could say are the most recognized ingredients of plant-based saturated fats. The most recognizable of all the MCTs is lauric acid. Besides extra virgin coconut oil, lauric acid is found in breast milk. Rich in antioxidants, lauric acid and other MCTs, may help the body absorb important nutrients and minerals, eliminate harmful bacteria, and fight the signs of aging. Their site has a wealth of information about the benefits of cooking with coconut oil, recipes, etc. Added bonus, they incorporate eco-friendly practices to protect and preserve the planet’s natural resources. I received two packets, one of which I’ve already packed in my doula bag for an upcoming birth – coconut oil is also wonderful for massage!

There were several other products included in this month’s box and loads of coupons and gift cards for the above companies as well as from Frego (non-toxic food storage containers) and Bamboo Bailey (online store for eco-friendly, natural and recycled products). The products received were worth well more than $21.

Ecocentric Mom: March “Baby” Discovery Box Review

In case you missed my last post, Ecocentric Mom is a fun and smart way to discover non-toxic, eco-friendly, and cruelty-free products from ethical, sustainable and honest companies.

Ecocentric Mom Logo 1

Each monthly box is packed with an assortment of hand-selected goodies and is delivered right to your door in chic, eco-friendly packaging. Members can choose between three Discovery Boxes for Mom, Mom-to-Be, or Baby, and also includes exclusive product discounts and monthly giveaways!

Here are just a few standouts from the March “Baby” Discovery Box:

Ecocentric Mom March “Baby” Discovery Box

Living Green Baby Natural Bamboo Lux Wipes. These are hands down the softest, plushest wipes I have felt. I’ve used really nice hemp and cotton wipes before but they were not nearly as luxurious as these. One layer is made of buttery soft bamboo velour and the other is a sturdy layer of bamboo fleece. If only they made baby blankets out of the same material… or baby bath robes. *hint hint*

IMG_2668Bamboo is very absorbent making these a great choice for overnight diapering and heavy wetters. Even if you don’t cloth diaper or choose to use disposable wipes, the uses for reusable wipes are endless – to softly remove make-up, to gently clean your baby or toddlers face after a messy meal, to wipe runny noses, to use as a warm compress, washcloth, burp cloth… the list goes on!

Episencial Sunny Sunscreen SPF 35. I’m already a fan of the entire Episencial line (I use the Snuggly lotion on myself) so I was jazzed to receive this sunscreen in the baby box. Before I get to why I like this particular product, this company has some impressive accolades worth noting.

Screen Shot 2013-03-28 at 10.42.54 PMThis is a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects the skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays. I like it because it’s lightweight, easy to apply, non-greasy yet moisturizing, gentle on sensitive skin, and doesn’t leave an icky white residue behind. It’s also water resistant for up to 80 minutes. Unlike harmful ingredients in chemical sunscreens that get absorbed into the skin, the active ingredients in this sunscreen, zinc and titanium, sit on the surface of the skin reflecting the suns rays. It also contains aloe and green tea extract to help keep skin cool and protected from infrared damage.

Waxelene The Petroleum Jelly Alternative. Hands down, this is one of the best products I’ve discovered in a while (thank you Ecocentric Mom!) If you haven’t already heard of Waxelene, get excited! You can use it for all the same things you would use petroleum jelly for (soothing and moisturizing dry or chapped skin, removing eye make-up, skin rashes on baby’s bum… the uses are endless) except it has NO petroleum, hydrogenated oils or other nasty chemicals. They use a patent-pending aeration process to create a silky smooth, non-greasy blend of 100% natural beeswax and certified organic and non-GMO soybean, rosemary and vitamin E oils that won’t clog pores. Plus, it comes in eco-friendly packaging and is made in a wind-powered facility. Love.

Squishy Snack Pak. Well, someone beat me to it. A couple of years ago, I thought of inventing something just like this and here it is! These reusable food containers have resealable bottoms so you can fill it with homemade baby and toddler foods and purees. The packaging is BPA-free, features a choke-free lid and is super convenient and great for on-the-go. I also like it for that transition period when little ones can’t use utensils just yet but want to eat “by myself.” I have a feeling we will see these everywhere very soon. The Mompreneur behind this should go on Shark Tank… I can see these everywhere.

Ecocentric Mom: March “Mom” Discovery Box Review

I was so excited to receive my first Ecocentric Mom box this month! In case you missed my last post, Ecocentric Mom is a fun and smart way to discover non-toxic, eco-friendly, and cruelty-free products from ethical, sustainable and honest companies.

Ecocentric Mom March Mom Discovery Box

March “Mom” Discovery Box

Here are some of my fave standouts from the March Mom Discovery Box:

Treefort Naturals Hemp Lemongrass Soap. If you’ve been reading my site for a while then you know I’m very selective about which products I use and the ingredients in them. This Mama-owned company’s handmade soap ticks all of the boxes:

  • Natural, local and organic ingredients used whenever possible ☑
  • Vegan. Family/friend tested & approved! ☑
  • Handmade in small batches using old-fashioned cold pressed method ☑
  • No yucky synthetic colors, dyes, perfumes or preservatives ☑

I had been using the same unscented olive oil soap for a while and was excited to switch it up. I am prone to dry/sensitive skin and noticed how moisturized and calm my skin was after using it one time. Hempseed oil is rich in Omega essential fatty acids which is easily absorbed by the skin, and gamma linoleic acids, an essential skin lipid which promotes regeneration at the cellular level – a process that slows down with age.

treefort

The soap is lightly scented with lemongrass, one of my favorite essential oils. I avoid anything too perfume-y but this has a nice and light uplifting scent that’s not overbearing. Lemongrass has been shown to relieve stress and insomnia, reduce headaches and irritability, and is calming but prevents drowsiness. It also has deodorizing and antiseptic properties that can help remedy skin ailments like eczema and psoriasis. I checked out their Etsy shop and they have lots of neat body care products for the whole family that also make nice gifts!

Go Raw 100% Organic Spirulina Energy Bar. I wasn’t sure what to make of this funky little green bar but tossed it in my handbag… and it came in handy. My toddler fell asleep in the car and instead of waking him, I pulled over to respond to some emails. Hungry and in need of an energy boost, I dove into the bar and washed it down with a bottle of water. I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty and satisfying it was. It’s kind of tropical- you can taste a hint of banana which plays off the nutty taste of the seeds.

IMG_2651

I managed a raw or “living” foods restaurants some years back and learned about the many benefits of spirulina. It’s rich in iron and has the highest source of vitamin B-12, which is essential for vegetarians. The sprouted seeds in this bar are also among the most nutritionally dense foods out there. I give bonus points for being gluten-free, vegan, raw, kosher and non-GMO. I’m going to pick up a big box so I can keep some bars in my handbag. They’re also perfect to keep in my doula bag when I need a quick and satisfying pick me up!

Mama Willow Tree Green Tea Herbal Eye Balm. I dig Mama Willow Tree’s philosophy. They strive to make all of their herbal products $12 or less and donate 5% of all sales to a non-profit supporting women and children. This mama-owned company also ticks all the boxes for me – all products are non-toxic, vegan, not tested on people, not animals, ingredients are organic, fair-trade sourced and responsibly obtained, scents are essential oil derived and packaging is recyclable, reusable or compostable.

Now, onto the product review. My eyes were in need of some serious TLC. I haven’t been getting as much sleep as I would like and I’m already prone to dark under eye circles. Plus, I’m staring to get some fine lines. Not wearing my glasses and staring at a computer squinting doesn’t help! After using this herbal eye balm twice a day for almost a week, I can see and feel why it’s their best-selling product.

Green-Tea-Herbal-Eye-Balmfinal

First and foremost, it was was quite calming and soothing. The area under my eyes is really sensitive and even the most natural products seem to irritate it so this was a big plus. The area under my eyes also looks a bit brighter and definitely feels smoother and firmer. I checked out the ingredients and the balm is made with sunflower oil which has high amounts of oleic acids and vitamins A, D, and E which are very nourishing for the skin. Elderflower, calendula, chamomile and lavender are soothing and help to reduce wrinkles and lines. It’s also infused with green tea extract which helps soothe tired puffy eyes and helps brighten dark under eye circles. Other interesting ingredients that sets this product apart from the others are carrot root, which aids in skin regeneration, fennel which helps to firm the fragile skin around eyes, and eyebright which has apparently been used for centuries to relieve eyestrain and inflammation. It also helps to brighten the eyes, hence the name.

I also like that it’s a balm opposed to a cream and is easy to apply. I can toss it in my handbag and apply it whenever I’m feeling dry. It also makes concealer go on smoothly. By the way, I caught my husband using it!

Essence of Vali “Sleep” A Bedtime Ritual. I have been waking up in the middle of the night lately with lots on my mind, like my never ending to-do list, and have had some trouble going back to sleep. Instead of cruising Instagram, I dabbed a drop of this essential oil blend onto the corner of the pillowcase. No joke, I drifted back off to a restful sleep in no time… until my toddler woke me. I used it again the following night before going to sleep and it helped to promote a sense of peace and relaxation. I imagine this would be great to carry on long flights too. It’s easy to understand why it this award-winning gem has a cult following.

Waxelene The Petroleum Jelly Alternative. Brilliant product. If you haven’t already heard of Waxelene, get excited! You can use this for all the same things you would use petroleum jelly for (soothing and moisturizing dry or chapped skin, removing eye make-up, skin rashes, etc… the uses are endless) except it has NO petroleum, hydrogenated oils or other nasty chemicals. They use a patent-pending aeration process to create a silky smooth blend of 100% natural beeswax and certified organic and non-GMO soybean, rosemary and vitamin E oils that won’t clog pores. Plus, it comes in eco-friendly packaging and is made in a wind-powered facility. I’ve already used it to moisturize dry cuticles, remove eye make-up, tame my crazy eyebrows, and put some on my feet with cotton socks overnight for soft feeties in the morning!

Immunity Boosting Tea

This healing combination of immune boosting garlic + digestion aiding ginger + pH balancing citrus + circulation boosting cayenne helps your immune system stay strong and warms you up from the inside out.  It ‘s quite tasty and should be enjoyed sip-by-sip!

IMG_2408

Ingredients:

  • 1 clove garlic
  • ginger root
  • 1/2 lemon
  • cayenne
  • purified water
  • raw honey (optional)
  1. Peel and crush garlic.
  2. Peel and chop ginger into chunks. Place at the bottom of a large mug.
  3. Pour hot water into the mug over the chunks of ginger. Steep for 2 minutes.
  4. Add garlic.
  5. Squeeze half of the lemon into the mug.
  6. Add a dash (really, just a dash) of cayenne pepper right into the tea and stir.
  7. Add 1 tsp raw honey (optional)

Note: To unlock the healing powers of garlic, it must sit for 10 minutes after being crushed. A sulfur-based compound called alliin and an enzyme called alliinase are separated in garlic’s cell structure when it’s whole. Crushing garlic ruptures the cells and releases these elements, allowing them to come in contact and form a powerful new compound called alliicin, which not only has numerous health-promoting benefits but is also what gives garlic its pungent aroma and “bite.”

Cheers to good health!

15 Ways to Boost Your Immune System Naturally

‘Tis the season for sniffles, sneezes and sore throats! We can’t do much about the toxins, bacteria and viruses that we’re exposed to– but we can strengthen and support our immune systems which will help prevent these invaders from doing harm in the first place. Here are 15 ways to boost your immune system naturally and help keep you healthy and feeling good year-round!

1. Garlic. Garlic is one of nature’s most powerful immune boosters. It is a natural antimicrobial and unlike most antibiotics, garlic does not destroy the body’s normal flora. To unlock the healing powers of garlic, it must sit for 10 minutes after cutting. A sulfur-based compound called alliin and an enzyme called alliinase are separated in garlic’s cell structure when it is whole. Chopping garlic ruptures the cells and releases these elements, allowing them to come in contact and form a powerful new compound called alliicin which is also responsible for the garlic’s “bite” (more bite = more healing benefits). A favorite winter remedy and immunity enhancer containing garlic is Herbalist Rosemary Gladstar’s fire cider. You can also try combining garlic with lemon, ginger and cayenne for a surprisingly pleasant immune boosting tea.

2. Catch some Zzz’s. Getting enough sleep keeps our immune systems primed and ready to fight off invaders. It is also the crucial time when our bodies restore and repair themselves. Shoot for 8 hours of good quality sleep a night and try taking a 20-minute catnap if you are falling short. Here are some great tips to help ensure a good night’s rest.

3. Emotional Well-Being/Stress Management. Depression, negative states of mind, grief and stress produce corticosteroids which depress immune function. By doing breathing exercises, meditating, practicing yoga or simply doing things you enjoy, you can help boost immunity, relieve tension and enhance physical and mental resilience. These meditation exercises calm the mind and have been proven to significantly strengthen immunity.

4. You Are What You Eat. Eating refined sugars and processed, packaged foods regularly makes it tough for your body to maintain a strong immune system. These foods lack essential vitamins and nutrients and make your body work overtime to process and digest foods that the human body wasn’t designed to eat. Try incorporating more whole foods (foods as close to their natural state as possible) into your diet– especially fresh, raw fruits and vegetables.

5. Go Green. Speaking of raw vegetables, dark leafy greens are loaded with phytonutrients. A recent study has also shown that green veggies are the source of a chemical signal that’s important for a fully functioning immune system. These chemical signals ensure that immune cells in the digestive tract and skin function properly. For a delicious way to drink your greens and get your morning off to a good start, check out this Green Goddess smoothie recipe from friend and holistic health coach Emma Goodwin-Dasilva.

6. Elderberries. This immune boosting botanical is packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Elderberry syrup has a long history of use in traditional European medicine and is so highly regarded that it has been called the “medicine chest of country people.”  This proven remedy is known to shorten the duration of colds to 3-4 days and is also effective against 10 different strains of the flu. Elderberry preparations are traditionally taken early enough to head off a massive viral invasion from the get-go. We recently started making our own elderberry syrup which is easy to prepare and saves a lot of money.

7. H20. Drinking plenty of pure filtered water helps flush out any harmful toxins that your immune system would otherwise have to deal with. Remember, not all water is the same. Tap water is acidic and laden with chemicals. Bottled water is unfortunately not much better.  The EWG found that most bottled water is just tap water in a plastic bottle which leeches BPA (a potent hormone disrupter that has been associated with many health problems). The best water for your health is one that filters all harmful contaminants, helps to balance pH levels and gives you the added benefit of antioxidants. Save money and reduce exposure to chemicals in your water by getting a good quality water filter. Be sure to use a reusable non-toxic bottle such as the ones made by Lifefactory.

8. Vitamin D. Research shows that vitamin D, which is made when our skin is exposed to sunlight, plays a vital role in activating white blood cells that protect the body from illnesses. The best way to optimize Vitamin D levels is through safe, smart and limited sunscreen-free exposure to the sun. Mushrooms are also an excellent source of vitamin D. Mycologist Paul Stamets discovered that you can naturally multiply their levels of vitamin D by exposing them to sunlight. Vitamin D-enriched mushrooms are best made from June until September and can be dried as the high vitamin D levels generated will last for more than a year! This is especially beneficial for people living in colder climates.

9. Get moving. Too little exercise can lead to a stagnant lymphatic system and weaken the immune system. Studies have shown that remaining active through regular exercising can help boost your immune system by increasing the amount of white blood cells in your body to help fight off any forms of illness. It is important to note that too much exercise or too vigorous exercise produces corticosteroids which can strain your body and depress immune function. Moderate exercise such as Tai Chi, Pilates, yoga, swimming and walking are good options for boosting immunity.

10. Vitamin C. This master immune booster helps immune cells mature, has an antihistamine effect, controls excess levels of the stress hormone cortisol which can suppress immunity and is antibacterial and antiviral. It works by increasing the production of antibodies and in particular, raises levels of interferon, the antibody that coats cell surfaces, preventing the entry of viruses. Because your body doesn’t produce or store vitamin C, it is important to include it in your diet. Papaya, bell peppers, strawberries, broccoli, pineapple, brussels sprouts, kiwi, oranges, cantaloupe and kale are all rich in vitamin C.

11. Zinc.  This trace element is essential for cells of the immune system. A zinc deficiency affects the ability of T cells and other immune cells to function as they should. Nuts and seeds are a good vegetarian source of zinc. While it’s important to have sufficient zinc in your diet, too much can actually inhibit the function of the immune system.

12. Healthy Fats.  Essential Fatty Acid’s (EFAs) are necessary fats that humans cannot synthesize, and must be obtained through diet. They boost the immune system and have also been shown to lessen inflammation and increase the activity of phagocytes, the white blood cells that eat up bacteria. Plant based foods rich in EFA’s include spinach, winter squash, avocado, broccoli, cauliflower, beans, nuts and seeds. Another way to get more omega-3 fatty acids in your diet is to add chia seed oil or flax seed oil to a smoothie. The Total EFA by Health From the Sun is a great vegetarian supplement available for adults and kids.

13. Balanced pH. An alkaline body can prevent disease and is much healthier, as illnesses and infections mainly occur in an acidic body. Excesses of meat, dairy and refined sugars make your body more acidic (I could dedicate an entire post on the benefits of ditching meat and dairy altogether but I’ll save that one for another time). There is a lot of information on this subject. Learn more about naturally improving your pH balance here.

14. Coconut Water. Breastmilk aside, “Co-co” is my toddler’s favorite beverage. Interestingly enough, coconut water contains high amounts lauric acid, which is one of the compounds in breastmilk that aids the body in fighting infection. Coconut water helps balance the ratio of good-to-bad bacteria in your digestive tract, is naturally antibacterial and antimicrobial which are both beneficial in fighting infections, warding off disease, and boosting your immune system.

14. Only eat what you need. Restricting calories may reduce levels of compounds in the body that depress your immune response. Overweight adults who reduced their daily caloric intake by nearly a third boosted their immune response by 50% according to a Tufts study published in the Journal of Gerontology. Those who cut calories by ten percent had smaller improvements. The finding is intriguing because if restricting calories boosts immunity, it may be an indication that the aging process is slowed down in people who carefully control their diets. A weakened immune response is a well-known hallmark of aging with T-cells becoming less effective as we grow older.

15. Wash your hands. While washing your hands may not affect your immune system directly, it helps prevent infection and illnesses by reducing the amount of germs and bacteria your immune system has to fight. Keep nails short and wash hands frequently with good, old-fashioned hot water and chemical-free soap, especially after using the bathroom, changing diapers and before handling food. Ditch antibacterial soaps and sanitizers that are loaded with toxins which increase the risk of creating resistant bacteria and over-dry and crack the skin, making transmission of viruses that much easier. A few cloths sprinkled with drops of essential oils with antibacterial and antimicrobial properties such as lavender, cinnamon, clove, geranium, lemon, lime, orange, thyme and rosemary are good when on-the-go.

The Non Toxic Shop™ Synergy Skin Care Review + Giveaway!

Many companies with “natural” products on the market today focus on telling you what toxic ingredients they don’t contain, instead of revealing the toxic ingredients they do contain.  This is known as greenwashing.  For example, some companies will label their products paraben-free but use an alternative preservative such as phenoxyethanol which is almost as toxic as using parabens!

The best way to ensure you are purchasing truly non-toxic cosmetics and skin care products is by visiting the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database and reading ingredients.  While visiting the database I discovered The Non Toxic Shop which sells Australian made natural skin care products for the entire family.

The Non Toxic Shop keeps it natureal by:

  • Only using naturally derived or certified organic ingredients (that are truly non-toxic).
  • Not testing on animals and is vegan-friendly.
  • Using eco-friendly recyclable packaging.

Their mission is to help reduce their impact on the environment and provide sustainable, non-toxic products at an affordable price.

I wanted to try a new skin care regimen and have been using the Synergy Skin Care line exclusively for the past 6 weeks.  My skin is thanking me for it.  These products feel really good and my skin is looking really good.  The Synergy line is infused with an all-star list of ingredients which work together to combat a myriad of skin concerns such as blemishes, free radicals, uneven skin tone, fine lines, loss of elasticity, pigmentation and sun damage.

Synergy Skin Care Prize Pack

I start my routine off with the Synergy Face Wash twice a day.  It works well on its own but I prefer putting a small amount on my Clarisonic electric face brush which makes a nice lather.  It removes make-up and dirt without drying my skin.

About 2-3 times a week I use a pump of the Synergy Micro-Refining Scrub in the evenings which is gentle enough for my sensitive skin, yet effective at exfoliating and helping to unclog my pores.  After rinsing it off  with tepid water, my skin feels silky smooth and has a nice glow!

Next I spritz my face with the  Synergy Toner which preps my skin for the next step.  Sometimes I spritz my face with the toner throughout the day to refresh my skin.

I follow up with the Synergy Moisturizer which is perfectly hydrating without leaving any greasiness behind.

In the evenings, I apply a pump of the Synergy Serum to my face, neck and eye area before moisturizing.  It’s jam-packed with ingredients such as Olive Oil, Coenzyme Q10, Resveratrol, Vitamin B3, Phospholipids, Sphingolipids, Colloidal Oatmeal, Arnica Extract, Cucumber Fruit Extract, Green Tea Leaf Powder, Ginseng Root Extract and Radish Root Extract.

Review: Soft Star Shoes & Special Offer!

We let our babe go barefoot whenever possible. When he does wear shoes, we put him in minimalist shoes like Soft Star which are specifically designed for natural foot movement and healthy foot development. The wider design allows plenty of room for toes to wiggle around and spread out and the low profile, slip resistant soles helps to minimize trips when little ones are getting the hang of walking and running.

We’re onto our third pair of super soft Vegan Hotcakes which have been great for indoors and warmth and his Laguna sandals have gotten some good use in the warmer weather. I wanted a good pair of closed toe shoes that will carry into into Autumn and Winter so I was really excited when Soft Star sent us a pair of classic Dorados to check out!

Image © Natureal Mom 2012

Even though I’m already a fan of Soft Star shoes, I always share my honest opinions, experiences and findings in my reviews and never accept money to review products or services. For more information, check out my review policy.

Aside from being adorable, he’s able to walk in the Dorados easily and comfortably. The velcro strap at the ankle makes them easy to get on and off and the closed toe protects his little piggies from sticks, sand and pebbles.  We also received a pair of removable sheepskin innersoles that are supposed to keep feet warm in cooler weather and wick moisture away in hotter weather. It sounds counter intuitive but it’s been in the triple digits here and they do seem to keep his feet dry. I also love the nutmeg color with forest green strap and yellow star!

Image © Soft Star Shoes

Of course I have to give Soft Star kudos for keeping it natureal:

  • No toxic chemicals, dyes, or pollutants in these kicks! Only natural materials are used including formaldehyde-free leathers.
  • Hands down, one of the most environmentally and socially responsible companies out there.
  • Each pair is handmade making them one of a few shoe manufacturers whose materials and production remain entirely in the US.

Also worth mentioning:

  • You can Design Your Own shoes choosing from different colors, materials (including 100% vegan options) and motifs.
  • A selection of soft and durable Waldorf and Montessori classroom shoes are available.

Giveaway: Daughters of the Revolution Butterfly Dress

Image © Ramona Rosales

I was walking around the farmer’s market when I saw a young woman wearing a beautiful, flowy, feminine dress and just had to stop and ask her where she bought it. It turns out her friend Emily Cadenhead, a local designer and mother, created the dress for her clothing line Daughters of the Revolution. You can imagine how excited I was to learn that Daughters of the Revolution is committed to sustainable design. The family run team works on a micro-level to carefully select ethically and environmentally responsible techniques for their garments which are a combination of organic fabrics, natural fibers and silks that are dipped in chemical-free vegetable dyes. Most of their sequins and beadwork are also made of recycled materials.

Emily created this clothing line to evoke the sensibility of freedom, nature, love, and femininity that have marked her life. Her parents are hippies who live an environmentally friendly lifestyle, which liberally encourages creativity. Growing up in Malibu and Palm Springs with nature outside her window, Emily spent most of her upbringing painting and drawing. In 2007, she started Daughters of the Revolution with a small collection of hand painted dresses. Today, Emily’s print designs echo nature and fairytales with recurring motifs of flowers, seashells, feathers, animal and ethnic prints.

The focus of her designs are comfort above all else, therefore developing a loyal following of women from around the world. Her dresses have been seen on celebrities like Anne Hathaway, Eva Mendes, Elle Macpherson, Rachel McAdams, an expecting Alyson Hannigan, and second time new mamas, Kate Hudson and Kimberly Van der Beek. My favorite design is the Butterfly Dress – it’s very versatile and can be worn in the city or country, day or night and will flatter any shape. It’s also very nursing friendly.

Review: Ferro Eco-Couture Mineral Cosmetics

Image © Natureal Mom

I was a little skeptical when asked to review mineral cosmetics because I have been disappointed by other mineral cosmetics in the past. The products have either irritated or dried out my sensitive skin, contained hidden chemicals or toxins, or looked caked-on and unnatural. I’m really glad I did this review because Ferro Cosmetics is truly a gem.

Founded by cosmetologist, celebrity make-up artist and mother Krissy Ferro, only 100% natural ingredients are used to beautify, soothe, and nourish the skin. It’s refreshing to come by an honest company with high quality products, high standards and integrity. Check out these awesome ways Ferro Cosmetics keeps it natureal:

  • Registered with EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database.
  • Participated in the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and earned Champion Status.
  • Discloses all ingredients (including chemicals in “fragrance,” an ingredient in 40 percent of all personal care products which in the United States can be claimed as a trade secret, even when it contains hormone disruptors, carcinogens and other harmful chemicals).
  • Contains ZERO toxins, bismuth, parabens, artificial dyes, fillers, chemicals, nanos or micron particles, preservatives, talc, fragrance, or other harsh ingredients.
  • Cruelty-free, not tested on animals, vegan.
  • Eco-conscious. Uses minimal packaging, sustainable materials, leaving a minimal carbon footprint by making smart energy choices.
  • Gives back. Ferro Cares partners with charities that preserve human and animal rights, sustainability of the planet and freedom and empowerment of women and children.

Now that we can feel good about what we are putting on our skin, let’s get to the fun stuff!

Ultimate Mineral Foundation

I have tried many loose mineral powder foundations and have not been very pleased with the results. They feel heavy, settle into fine lines, dry out my skin and look caked-on and unnatural… so I didn’t know what to expect. I shook some of the powder onto the lid of the jar, swirled my brush into the powder, tapped off the excess, and applied onto my skin using a circular motion. I was pleasantly surprised by how much coverage I was able to get using such a small amount and it looked very natural. It evened out my complexion covering dark spots and redness and didn’t leave my skin feeling dry or tight. I also used it everyday for a few weeks before writing this review to make sure it didn’t break out my sensitive skin. Success!

Eye Candy

I dipped my brush into Champagne (a pearly neutral) swirled it onto the lid of the jar, tapped off the excess and swept it on my entire eyelid. I did the same with Sungold (a warm brown) and swept it on the crease. I quickly blended and  was pleased with how soft and natural it looked, especially for being so effortless. To get this look with other eye shadows, I usually have to apply, blend, re-apply, blend some more… it’s a process. As an added bonus, it stayed on throughout the day. Later that evening, all I had to do was moisten the application brush and dip it into into Dirt (a dark brown) to define my eyebrows and line my eyes for a more dramatic affect.

Mineral Bronzer

I used the Flawless Face Brush (made from cruelty-free, natural fine hair bristles) to apply Glow Baby Glow. This shade is almost a cross between a bronzer and a blush that gave my cheeks a sun-kissed glow and a subtle pop of color.

Crystal Mineral Veil

I used the Flawless Face Brush to dust Rose over my entire face giving it a nice radiant finish. I also tried their suggestion of mixing a little with my body moisturizer and applied it to my décolletage on date night for a sexy glow!

Lip Glossamour

I’m more of a lip balm girl but I actually really like the Lip Glossamour in Bellini. It’s described as “not a pink, not a plum, but a perfect shade to give lips a kiss of natural lip color” which is spot on. Bonus points for making my lips feel soft and smooth and not sticky or gooey.

I am committed to writing honest reviews and can honestly say Ferro Cosmetics gets an A+ all around. As a busy mama, they are quick and so easy to use, last all day requiring no touch ups, and look, feel and are good.
